Lansing, MI 48911
Tuesday, December 16, 2025, 6:30-8pm
In place of a general meeting, we'll be having our annual Christmas Party at the Alfreda Schmidt Community Center.
Come enjoy delicious food and friendly neighbors, vote on Churchill Downs' best Christmas lights, celebrate the winner of the Shining Light award, and even say hi to Mr. and Mrs. Claus!
Head to the home page to learn more about the Shining Light Award
Friday, October 31st, 6-8pm at Wainwright Park
Depending on where you live in the neighborhood, you might get very few trick-or-treaters or a whole bunch! If you don't get many kids stopping by, come by Wainwright Park during normal Trick-or-Treating hours (6-8pm) to pass out candy with neighbors! Bring your candy, costumes, and a chair to sit in.
We suggest that if you plan to be at the park, you leave a note on your front door telling kids who stop by that they can find you at the park.
May 17, 9-5pm
Plan ahead to have your garage sale together with the rest of your neighbors and take some time to go shopping around the neighborhood too! A few neighbors will drive around at 8am to make a map of where all the garage sales are, so make sure you are setting up by then so that we see you and add you to the map! Or send us a Facebook message or email to let us know you are planning to participate.
Tuesday, June 18, 6:30pm
Wainwright Park
Our annual neighborhood picnic will be June 18 at 6:30pm at Wainwright Park. There will be good food, a raffle, cool police trucks to explore, a casual softball game of Churchill Downs residents vs. City of Lansing employees, and a time to connect with your
neighbors. Some seating will be provided but you are welcome to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on. Come on out, bring a dessert to pass if you’d like, and enjoy the
evening at the park.
We do still need some volunteers to help set up this picnic. If you would like to volunteer or participate in the softball game, contact Claire at 517-898-5847
August 2025 8am - 12 noon
Wainwright School Parking lot
This is an opportunity for residents of Churchill Downs to dispose of items from their yard, home and garage for free. A trash compactor truck will be at the Wainwright elementary school parking lot, and residents can bring their bulky items to get rid of.
Watch for future information.
Councilmember Adam Hussain's constituent contact meetings happen on the 2nd Saturday of each month, resuming in January. Email Adam at hussai17@gmail.com to be added to his email list for more regular updates.
Southwest Lansing Constituent Contact Meeting
Second Saturday of the month from Alfreda Schmidt Community Center
5825 Wise Rd, Lansing, MI 48911
August 9th, 1-4pm
We had an amazing afternoon at the Youth Day on Saturday!
Kids raced each other on the inflatable obstacle course, did some crab walks and hula-hoop challenges to win prizes, got their faces beautifully painted, got their bikes repaired, snacked on popcorn and snowcones, went head to head with each other and LPD officers in basketball, went flying on the slip n slides, ran hard in their races, won awesome prizes, got soaked with water balloons, and then got super soaked with the firetruck at the end! It was amazing to see and experience all the joy that young people bring.
This was a community effort and we are super thankful for everyone that made this event happen and gave kids and families the opportunity to have fun together and be celebrated.
May 3, 2025, 2-5pm
Beyond being a name for our wonderful neighborhood, Churchill Downs is the name of the racetrack where the Kentucky Derby is held each May. For a fun celebration of the Kentucky Derby (and an opportunity to socialize), we will be meeting at Wainwright Park for potluck Hors d'Oeuvres. Dress as fancy as you can (or want to), bring a snack to share, and we will see you there!
Crosswalk Painting at Jerree St and Stillwell Ave.
Saturday, Sept 2, 10am-2pm
The City of Lansing’s Neighborhoods, Art, and Citizen Engagement department awarded us a grant to paint the crosswalks at the intersection of Jerree St. and Stillwell Ave. this summer. If you have ideas for what kind of design you would like on these crosswalks, please submit ideas to Elizabeth at hossinke@gmail.com by Friday, June 16. The designs will have to be relatively simple, as we will only have 2-3 colors to work with and we want to use stencils to make the painting process simple. We will vote on the design at the neighborhood picnic on June 20, and paint the crosswalks on September 2. On the day of the painting, we will need volunteers for traffic control as well as the painting itself.
We have helped hundreds of our neighborhood kids repair their bicycles for safer use in our community.
This is a free event for the children in our neighborhood.
Sponsored by CDCA, residents will have a place to dispose of items from your yard, home and garage.
The dumpster was at the Wainwright elementary school parking lot. The dumpster was available for the residents of the
Churchill Downs Community Association.
The Churchill Downs Community Association has planted flowers in the planters located by the signs that stand at the entryways to our neighborhood. Volunteers worked together, in order to plant some lovely flowers at our Churchill Downs permanent entryway signs. Thank you ladies, for helping to make our neighborhood entry's look more inviting.
Thank you everyone who joined us for our annual Christmas Celebration. We voted for the top three houses displaying Christmas lights.
Thursdays, 6-8pm at Wainwright Park.
Bring your family, friends, or just yourself to enjoy summer evenings at the park. A variety of sport equipment and games will be available to use.
Churchill Downs Community Association neighbors enjoying a great baseball game vs. the TinCaps. Thank you to Mayor Schor for the use of Suite. The three oldest kids even got to participate in the 3-legged big underwear race. Big Lug stopped for autographs and photo ops with everyone.
Thanks to: Glo, Judy, Mike Sr., Ernest, Sherry, Greg, Sharon, Beth, Mike Jr., Weather, Maddoc, Layne, Daphne and Nolan for attending
